    We have no doubt that these students will endeavour to be responsible role models.
    In grades 4/5 and 6 students have been working on writing speeches and the skills of a speaker. Students constructed speeches for our school leadership positions and then spoke to entire cohort and teachers. Students then voted on who they thought would make the best captains for each of our leadership positions. Leadership positions will be announced shortly where the selected students will be invited to attend a special assembly with their parents.

    Reading
    In Term 3 we have been looking at point of view. We look at a picture and write a speech bubble about what the character was thinking and feeling.
    {Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 11.38.32 AM.png}
    We have also been making connections to a text using our prior knowledge. These can be text-to-text, text-to-self and text-to-world. This week we read ‘When the Snake Bites the Sun.’
    “This text reminds me of when I saw a snake at the zoo, because in this book the main character is a snake.” (Grade 3 Student)
    Writing
    In Term 3 we have started writing our own indigenous stories. Our story is based around an Australian animal. We are learning how to create a picture story book. Each page has a sentence. The sentence needs to match the picture. When we are finished, we are going to read them to the preps.
    Maths
    In Term 3 we have been working on odd and even numbers and fluency of basic facts. We have been learning about number fact families. We learnt that 3 numbers can make 2 subtraction and 2 addition problems. We have been measuring reusable containers and measuring the areas of our names.
    {Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 11.38.44 AM.png}

    Inquiry
    In Term 3 our topic is called ‘What a load of Rubbish.’ We have been learning how to recycle and how we can reduce our waste. We have some worm farms at our school that we have been giving the worms the food scrapes. Last week we reused newspapers to make hats and baskets.

    Schools National Tree Planting Day
    On Friday the 28th July 2017, it was schools national tree planting day and a lady from Hume City Council came and helped us plant the seedlings. Her name was Mel and she explained to us how to plant the seedlings.

    We ordered 510 seedlings and got workers to come and drill 600 holes the day before.
    First, you put water crystals in your hole and you put the seedling in the hole using the goldilocks technique making sure it’s not too deep and not too high.
    Next, we covered the roots and then the helpers would come around and they would put a little guard around it. This consisted of three stakes (wooden sticks) and a plastic covering around the outside.
    At the start of the day we had the preps and the kindergartens. After we had the grade ones. After recess, we had the grade threes, fives and the sixes. The last hour we had the grade fours and the grade twos.

    SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT
    Dallas Brooks Community Primary School is working towards being a Resource Smart school. We have a lot of exciting initiatives on the horizon – such as becoming active participants in Enviroweek, Earth Day and World Environment Day. These events are celebrations of nationwide and worldwide sustainability and the perfect opportunity to promote and celebrate the ways in which we care for our world and sustain and manage our school’s water, power and waste.
